To be able to do the "hands-on" portions of each part, you will need to setup a virtual machine on your laptop and bring it with you. We have prepared a virtual image of (X)Ubuntu 12.10 (32-bits) that contains Bob pre-installed and all the course material you will need packaged-in. Follow the instructions bellow to download and setup the image:
Install VirtualBox. This is the virtualization platform in which Bob/Ubuntu is pre-installed.
Download our custom Bob/Ubuntu virtual image (when using Firefox, please right click on the link, and perform a "save link as") and place it anywhere you may like on your local laptop disk (be aware that the size of the file is around 1.2 GB)
Double-click on the OVA VirtualBox appliance and import it
Start the corresponding virtual machine
P.S.: The system is configured for a auto-login on the default user (bob). If you need administrative rights at any time, the password for bob is also bob.
Please test that the virtual machine is working as expected for you. Here are somethings you should look for:
Once at the Bob/Ubuntu desktop, make sure you can read the PDFs by the right of the desktop, double-clicking on them. Make sure you can use the Internet by clicking on the Firefox web browser icon on the left of the desktop;
Verify you can do the same test as above (the Firefox one only), with your laptop on the wireless network;
Verify you can use your keyboard. The virtual machine comes pre-configured with a US QWERTY keyboard. If your computer has a different one, you will need to configure it to get it right. Symbols like [ (open square brackets), ] (close square brackets), ' (single quotes), " (double quotes) and : (colon) maybe used through the course. If you cannot type those. See below for "Keyboard Configuration".
If everything worked, you should be set for the course.
Locate the "US flag" icon on the panel. This icon is a keyboard switching applet. Left-click the mouse button until the layout you require is displayed. We have pre-installed 3 layouts: US, Swiss French and Swiss German. If everything is working now, you should be done.
If that does not seem to work, you will need to right-click on that icon and make sure you choose both the keyboard layout and the language correctly, so they match the model/language of your keyboard. If you are still not able to configure the keyboard properly, please get in touch with us.
OVA file cannot be imported: Some older versions of VirtualBox do not accept OVA input files like the one for our custom image. Please upgrade to the latest VirtualBox version available in this case;
Mouse integration (e.g. scroll wheel) does not work: Please install the appropriate version of the "VirtualBox Guest Additions" on the Bob/Ubuntu guest. To do so, click on VirtualBox menu "Devices -> Install Guest Additions". After some time, you will find a CD called "VBOXADDITIONS[...]" mounted on your desktop. Please open this by double-clicking and run the "autorun.sh" command. You might need to type the password (see above) to continue.
The course material is already preinstalled and preconfigured on the virtual machine that we provide. If you still would like to have a quick look at it, you can access it here or download the corresponding zip archive.
